Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
Who’s the Fairest one of all?
Before you get your hands on Winter, you need to read Fairest. This is the untold story of Queen Levana. And you’re going to want to read it.
This novella is a character study of Queen Levana. I liked finding out more about her because she’s a mystery in the series. There isn’t a whole lot of information given about her. But in this novella, you find out how she grew up, why she doesn’t like people to see her face, her relationship with Channary, her hatred for Selene, how Winter is connected to her, and much more.
Levana is messed up. There were many times that I just wanted to scream at her and throw the book across the room. Levana is truly a devious villain.
“Come here, baby sister,” she whispered, and despite the terror twisting inside Levana’s stomach, her feet obeyed. “I want to show you something.”
I liked knowing more about the relationship between Levana and her older sister Channary. Channary, being Princess Selene’s mom, was quite the character herself. Neither of the sisters have much to pity because they’re evil. However, there are, of course, reasons they are the way they are.
I’m so much more excited to read Winter now that I’ve read this. The background information really helps because it covered a longer period of time that wouldn’t make sense as flashbacks in Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, or Winter. I loved the introduction to the character of Winter. I can’t imagine how she dealt with being raised in the vicinity of Levana and I absolutely cannot wait to see Selene’s & Winter’s reunion. I hope it’s good.
Counting down the days until Winter is released.
